Privacy Policy

WalkRoute ("we", "us", or "our") operates the WalkRoute mobile application. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your information when you use our app.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information

  • Email address (for authentication)
  • Display name (optional, set by you)
  • Profile photo (optional)

Location Data

  • GPS coordinates during walk recording (to trace your route on the map)
  • Background location when actively recording a walk (so recording continues when the screen is off)
  • We do not track your location when you are not actively recording or walking a route

Photos

  • Photos you take within the app to mark spots on your walks
  • Photos are stored in Firebase Storage linked to your account
  • Photos are optionally saved to your device's photo library under a "WalkRoute" album

Walk Data

  • Routes you create (coordinates, distance, duration, step count)
  • Spots you mark (name, description, location, photos)
  • Walk sessions (routes you walk, visited spots, timestamps)

Motion Data

  • Step count via device pedometer (to display walking statistics)
  • Motion activity data (to detect if you are stationary, for GPS optimization only)

Usage Data

  • App analytics (screen views, feature usage) via Firebase Analytics
  • Crash reports via Firebase Crashlytics

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide core app functionality (recording walks, saving spots, sharing routes)
  • To display your walking history, statistics, and achievements
  • To enable route sharing with other users via deep links
  • To improve app performance and fix bugs
  • To send push notifications (walk reminders, shared route alerts) — only with your permission

3. Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored securely using Google Firebase (Firestore, Storage, Authentication). Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. We follow industry-standard security practices to protect your information.

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We share data only in these cases:

  • Routes you make public: Visible to other WalkRoute users in the Discover section
  • Routes you share via link: Accessible only to people you share the link with
  • Service providers: Firebase (Google) for hosting, storage, and analytics

5. Your Rights

You can:

  • View and edit your profile information at any time
  • Delete individual walks and spots
  • Make routes private or public
  • Delete your entire account and all associated data (Settings → Delete Account)
  • Revoke location, camera, or photo permissions in iOS Settings at any time

6. Children's Privacy

WalkRoute is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected such information, please contact us.

7. Subscriptions

WalkRoute offers optional in-app subscriptions (WalkRoute Pro). Payments are processed by Apple through the App Store. We do not collect or store your payment information.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app or by email. Continued use of WalkRoute after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
